Finding JOY in Your Commute
How many folks can say they find JOY in their everyday commute? To work, to school, whatever shape that takes. Does it bring you joy?
It took me a lot of years to be able to say this but my daily commute brings me an immense amount of joy.
It took a bit of trial and error, figuring out routes and equipment, and dumb luck too!
For most of the summer of 2023, I rode my bike to work. I had a close call with a driver (that is, he sped up beside me and started throwing insults and threats), and it really shook me so I stayed away for a few months.
But I didn’t want this dingleberry to steal my joy.
It took a lot of tries and a lot of pep talks, but I got back on my bike. I got to start and end my work day with a big smile again.
In June 2024, the Funicular and elevator were shut down for a week for maintenance. These tools are a major part of my bike commute, helping me get up and out of the river valley without too much trouble (sweat). I needed an alternate route, so I added the train in the middle of my bike ride.
More joy! I love riding the train, and it helps me out so much when I feel low energy at the end of the day.
I never knew that my commute could contribute so much joy, peace and happiness to my day.
I’m glad I figured it out.
