Book Report Zine

Related, I have always wanted to be in a Book Club. I’ve had a few “false starts”, let’s call them. A Vegan Book Club back in 2015, and a virtual Book Club with Ritchie Community League in 2021 I think. Neither lasted.

But I loved it a lot.

By this point you are probably wondering these photos have to do with:

a) book reports

b) book clubs.

Well, I joined a new book club and I created this zine “book report” on our first title!

Hosted by some youth organizing with Climate Justice Edmonton, their first selection is a non-fiction title, a novella I’d say. They started a book club so we could all “skill up” as a group. Learn and explore new concepts and ideas together, increase our knowledge, and build a stronger community.

This concept was so popular and the first meeting packed so full, they had to split us into two large groups! And then interest died down fast. Unfortunately for the club overall, but great for me because I had a fighting chance to get to know the people in my group!

I am learning a lot from the book, and from the youth in my small group. This particular chapter was inspirational, and got me thinking a lot about my own community building efforts with Not Ladylike and Ritchie.

So I combined some quotes from the book with collage, magazine cut outs, and words from various Not Ladylike Community posters and handouts.

I think it turned out beautifully, and it helped me dig into the material in a way that was missing without the art.
